TITANIC VS TITAN

Peristiwa tenggelamnya Kapal Titanic seolah sudah diramalkan sebelumnya dalam sebuah novel karya Morgan Robertson yang berjudul “The Wreck of The Titan”, yang menceritakan malapetaka tenggelamnya sebuah kapal raksasa bernama Titan. Novel karya Morgan Robertson tersebut terbit pada tahun 1898. Saat Robertson menulis novelnya, belum ada teknologi yang dapat membuat kapal sebesar Titan, jadi ini bisa dikatakan sebagai hasil imajinasinya. Robertson pun menggambarkan kesombongan manusia yang menyebut kapal tersebut tidak dapat tenggelam. Dalam novel tersebut terdapat sejumlah kemiripan antara kapal yang bernama Titan dengan Titanic, antara lain:



* Jumlah baling-baling pada Titan dan Titanic sama-sama berjumlah 3


* Spesifikasi kapal yang mirip

* Panjang kapal Titan adalah 800 kaki, sedangkan Titanic 882 kaki

* Jumlah penumpang sebanyak 2500 pada Titan, Titanic 2224 penumpang

* Bagian kapal yang rusak ketika mengalami kecelakaan adalah sama-sama  bagian kanan depan

* Saat terjadinya malapetaka, sama-sama terjadi di bulan April. Tepatnya titanic tenggelam pada tanggal 14 April 1912.

* Nama kapal pun hampir mirip, kapal dalam karya fiksi Robertson tersebut adalah Titan.

* Titan hanya menyediakan 24 sekoci penyelamat untuk 2500 penumpangnya. Hal yang sama juga terjadi pada Titanic. Begitu yakinnya Titanic tak dapat tenggelam, hingga pemilik kapal hanya menyediakan 20 sekoci penyelamat untuk 2224 penumpang, atau hanya separuh dari jumlah sekoci yang dibutuhkan.

Dari sejumlah kesamaan tersebut, ada juga perbedaannya. Titan dalam novel tersebut tenggelam ketika kembali dari New York setelah berkunjung 3 kali. Sedangkan Titanic tenggelam pada saat pelayaran perdananya menuju New York.


KISAH KAPAL TITANIC

RMS Titanic dimiliki oleh White Star Line dan dibuat di galangan kapal Harland and Wolff. Titanic merupakan kapal uap penumpang terbesar di dunia pada masa peluncurannya. Namun na'as pada saat pelayaran pertamanya, Titanic menabrak gunung es pada pukul 23:40 (waktu kapal), Minggu, 14 April 1912, dan tenggelam sekitar 2 jam 40 menit kemudian pada pukul 2:20 pagi hari Senin, 15 April 1912. Tenggelamnya bencana tersebut mengakibatkan kematian lebih dari 1.500 orang, dan menjadikannya sebagai bencana laut terburuk semasa zaman dalam sejarah.

FILM TITANIC

85 tahun kemudian, sutradara kondang James Cameron menginspirasikan kisah nyata tenggelamnya Titanic dalam sebuah film. Film ini dibintangi Leonardo DiCaprio dan Kate Winslet. Film ini memenangkan 11 Academy Awards yang diselenggarakan pada tanggal 23 Maret 1998. Film ini juga berhasil menjadi film box office terbesar dalam sejarah perfilman.

Kisah Jack & Rose seperti dalam film sebenarnya tidak ada. Jack Dawson dan Rose DeWitt Bukater yang diperankan dalam film ini oleh Leonardo DiCaprio dan Kate Winslet hampir semuanya tokoh fiksi (James Cameron memodelkan tokoh Rose seperti artis Amerika Serikat, Beatrice Wood, yang tak punya hubungan apapun dengan sejarah Titanic). Selain Rose dan Jack, berbagai tokoh yang berkaitan dengan mereka juga fiksi. Termasuk tunangan Rose, Caledon ‘Cal’ Hockley (Billy Zane), ibunya Ruth (Frances Fisher), valet Cal, Spicer Lovejoy (David Warner), dan penumpang kelas tiga yaitu teman-teman Jack: Fabrizio (Danny Nucci) dan Tommy (Jason Barry).
